Brew In A Bag

Savannah Breweries

Made it back down to Savannah recently which will probably be the last time in awhile. While not known as a destination beer city, there are some very good to exceptional small breweries around town. Here are a few of my favorites:

Service Brewing is a veteran owned brewery close to the river and downtown. Awesome indoor area and great outdoor seating up front, usually with a food truck. Absolutely fantastic clean and crisp czech pils (Rally Point) is one of their flagships - highly recommended. They also have an excellent west coast IPA (Compass Rose) that is a great bridge between the old school malty/piney examples and new school tropical bombs. They also do several small batch and seasonal offerings - I had the "banana beer" (wheat ale leaning towards hefeweizen), a spring saison, and amber mexican lager - all great representations of the styles.

Next on the list is Two Tides.

Wow, these folks brew up an astounding variety of styles and all exceptionally well executed. When I was there, I had a fantastic kellerbier that was a collaboration with Schilling (on my top 3 list for US lager focused breweries for sure!) in New Hampshire and this crazy berry fruited smoothy sour (not sure I would even call this a "beer" but wow was it good)! They also had a dark czech lager, imperial stout (collab with Burial out of Asheville) and a bunch of (mostly hazy) IPAs on the menu - crazy! I highly recommend these guys if you get to Savannah or are lucky enough to see their stuff on the shelves. The tiny brewery is in a historic old house in the Starland neighborhood outside of downtown.

Another great neighborhood place is Hop Atomica.

Very good beer and even better wood fired pizza! They also have a micro-distillery and make some great spirits. I wasn't impressed as much with the beer as on previous visits, but still highly recommend visiting. Not to say that the beer was bad or anything, just not exceptional. I had a seasonal maibock which was very good. Will definitely try more styles on the next visit. The pizza is, in my view, the best in town and it is a great little neighborhood venue both inside and out on the patio.

Hope you can get out to Savannah to see all the sites and enjoy some great beer! Cheers.
